For 2026 the World Cup expands from 32 teams to 48 — its biggest format ever. The 48 nations are drawn into 12 groups of four (Groups A to L). That’s up from eight groups in 2022, and it means more nations, more matches and more first-time qualifiers.
In total there are 104 matches, up from 64, played across 16 stadiums in the United States, Canada and Mexico — the first World Cup hosted by three countries.
The group stage
Each of the 12 groups has four teams who play each other once — three games per team. Teams earn three points for a win and one for a draw, and are ranked by points, then goal difference, then goals scored.
The top two teams from every group advance automatically. Because 24 teams (two per group) isn’t enough to fill the new bracket, the eight best third-placed teams across all groups also go through — so 32 of the 48 teams reach the knockouts.
The knockout rounds
New for 2026 is a round of 32 — the first knockout round. From there it’s single-elimination all the way: round of 32, round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and the final. There’s no second chance; lose and you’re out.
