How the World Cup 2026 knockout bracket works

With 48 teams, the 2026 World Cup introduces a brand-new knockout round: the round of 32. Here is how a team gets there, how the bracket fits together, and what decides a tie.

Getting into the knockouts

Thirty-two of the 48 teams reach the knockout stage. The top two from each of the 12 groups go through automatically — that is 24 teams — and they are joined by the eight best third-placed teams across all the groups.

Ranking the third-placed teams is where it gets interesting: all 12 group thirds are compared on points, then goal difference, then goals scored, and the best eight advance while the other four go home. A third-place finish can still be enough — or agonisingly not.

From the round of 32 to the final

The 32 qualifiers enter a straight knockout: round of 32, round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and the final, with a third-place play-off between the beaten semi-finalists. Lose once and you are out.

The bracket is fixed in advance — which group winner meets which runner-up or third-placed team is set by the tournament’s bracket plan — so as soon as the groups finish, the whole path to the final falls into place. On kickoff26 the bracket fills in automatically as results come in.

What happens if a match is level

Group games can end in a draw, but knockout matches cannot. If the scores are level after 90 minutes, two 15-minute periods of extra time are played. If it is still level after that, the match is decided by a penalty shoot-out.

That is why the knockout rounds so often produce the tournament’s most dramatic nights — a single kick can send a team through or knock them out.
